About me

Hi, I’m Alice! I’m a freelance writer and science communicator who focuses on telling stories of wildlife and conservation. I have a long history as a birder and bird photographer, and have recently discovered a knack for writing.

More about me on my website here.

What is this newsletter about?

As a former wildlife biologist, you would expect this newsletter to be about wildlife and conservation. However, that’s not the case, as I tend to write a lot about people.

Why?

In short, I am fascinated with how people think. My mind turns with the questions: What motivates us? What affects our behaviour? How did we all get to where we are today?

These questions are not only helpful for understanding ourselves, but also for the bigger goal of conservation. Because at the end of the day, conservation is not really about wildlife facts, although that can help people engage with the subject. Conservation is about people. People are the ones making the policies. They are the ones taking the actions. We need to know how to talk and connect with people to make a difference for our planet.

That’s why in this newsletter, I plan to dig deep into the subjects of pyschology, sociology, mental health, and media, in my own personal life as well as in the bigger picture. I also hope seek out stories of events and people that have an intersection with wildlife and ecology. I think that’s what I ultimately want to write about, so I’m excited to start exploring some of these ideas with all of you.
