My 2024 reminders
For myself, and maybe for some of you as well (+ some intentions for the new year).
So Alice, what’s going on with your newsletter?
I feel like that’s a question I’ve been getting from a lot of people in the past few months. Okay, maybe from like three people, but it was enough for me to think about what I wanted to do with this virtual space. Because to be honest, I let things slip in 2023. I thought I was going to have time to sit and reflect and have some profound thoughts (I mean, I did, but not enough to do so coherently). So alas, this newsletter has been sitting dormant for almost a year.
But that’s going to change. I graduated from my science journalism program in December. So in 2024, we’re back on the internet (woo). I now have time to read, think, synthesize — all that good stuff. Like before, I want to use this space as a way to share some of my not-so-fully formed thoughts, mainly in the form of book/content recommendations, but also reflections on things I report/write on in my professional life.
I also want to use this new year to be intentional. I’ve been in a weird limbo of learning/reinvention in the past year and a half, and I have no doubt that process will continue. But it does feel like I can see some semblance of a path ahead of me. I already know it’s not going to be easy, so I’m writing down some reminders this new year in case I get lost along the way. Hopefully they’re helpful for you too.
Happy new year! Thanks for sticking around.
Reminders for 2024
You don’t need to have it all figured out. Trust that you can figure it out when the time comes.
All the important things in life take time to build. Be patient.
Empathy is scarce, so it’s important to foster as much of it within/around yourself as possible.
Let yourself be known. It’s okay to take up space.
Change and growth are one of the hardest things to go through, but also one of the most beautiful things about being a human. Embrace it.
Reflection and introspection can solve a lot. Remember to make time for it.
